Prof. Patrick Siarry was born on May 28, 1952, in Pertuis. His research area is relatively (since 1982) new “metaheuristic” optimization such as simulated annealing, which are indicated for the so-called problems of “hard optimization” because of their ability to avoid in principle, trapping in sub-optimal solutions. This topic is multidisciplinary in nature, both by the source of the methods studied (physics, biology, ethology). Much of his work is explicitly one or the other keywords – in particular, modeling, identification, learning rule bases (artificial intelligence), control, nondestructive testing and maintaining the biological and medical engineering.

His main research interests are computer-aided design of electronic circuits, and the applications of new stochastic global optimization heuristics to various engineering fields. He is also interested in the fitting of process models to experimental data, the learning of fuzzy rule bases, and of neural networks.

Bibliography: Dr. Shen joined the Department of Electrical Engineering and Electronics, University of Liverpool as a Senior Lecturer in 2007 and became a Reader in June 2014. Before this he has been working on terahertz-related technology for many years, first as a Research Associate (2001-2004) at the Cavendish Laboratory, University of Cambridge, and then as a Senior Scientist (2004-2007) at TeraView Limited, Cambridge. He has been awarded 6 terahertz-related patents, published 4 book chapters and over 80 peer-reviewed journal papers that are highly cited with an h-index of 30.

His current research interests include the development of novel terahertz devices and imaging systems with a focus on the exploitation of its applications in industry and science.

Falah Ali is a Reader in Digital Communications at the University of Sussex. He received his BSc and MSc from Cardiff University in 1984 and 1986, respectively, and his PhD from the University of Warwick in 1992. Between1992- 1994 he was a postdoctoral research associate at Lancaster University. In 1994 he joined the University of Sussex as a Lecturer in Electronics Engineering and in 2000 as a Senior Lecturer. He has over 20 years of research experience during which he has led many projects and awarded research funding from the government and industry. He coauthored over 100 papers in various journals and conferences. He served as a member of technical programme committee in several international conferences, and as a co-chair of the Sensornets’14 and PECCS’12. His research interests are in the areas of wireless communications and sensor networks. He is a Fellow of IET, Senior Member of IEEE, and Chartered Engineer.
